Fish migration in the Canary Islands
Pelagic populations move. The distribution of a species can change from one season to the next, and that single fact is the reason this business is organised the way it is.
Migrations do not always follow the same pattern
A concentration of bluefin tuna can behave differently the following year. Routes shift with water temperature, with the distribution of bait and with conditions far from here. Treating last season as a map is the most common mistake in this fishery.
If the fish move, we move too. We do not want to be tied to a single port or a single area when the activity is happening somewhere else.
History generates hypotheses, not certainties
We keep what we learn: which species appeared, when, under what conditions, which structures produced and how that compares to other years. But we use it to form a hypothesis for this week, never as a promise.
The ocean changes, and that is why we do not fish the same way every year.
What this means for booking
It means we will tell you honestly what is likely for your dates rather than what is convenient. It also means that if the run is late or early, we will say so before you travel.
Why we do not publish fixed dates
It would be easy to put up a table of exact dates and it would look very professional. It would also be untrue.
The routes change year to year with water temperature, currents and where the bait is. A tuna that came in through one area in 2024 may come in somewhere else in 2026, or three weeks early, or a month late.
What we can do is tell you what is happening this season when you write to us, because the captain talks to the fleet every week. That is worth a great deal more than a printed calendar.
